What is a meckel diverticulum?

A

Ileal remnant of vitello-intestinal duct.

Contains ectopic gastric mucosa or pancreatic tissue.

How can a meckel diverticulum present?

A
  • Most are asymptomatic
  • May present with severe rectal bleeding (classically neither bright red nor malaena)
  • Other presentations: - Intussusception
    - Volvulus around bowel
    - Diverticulitis (appendix mimic)

- Demonstrates increased uptake by ectopic gastric mucosa in 70%

A

If mesentery not fixed in fetal life at duodenojejunal flexure or in ileocaecal region - base shorter and predisposed to volvulus.

A
  • Obstruction
