What are the different types of gastroenteritis?

A

Viral: watery, diarrhea, fever

Bacterial: cramping, bloody diarrhea, caused by e.coli, C.Diff, bad hygiene

Protozoal: giardia, “been camping”

A

What are the symptoms of duodenal and gastric ulcers?

A

Duodenal: burning sensation in between the breast bone and nasal, gets better after eating or taking antacids

Gastric ulcers: worsen with eating usually two hours after a meal (because it’s in the stomach )

A

EGD
Barium swallow
Urea breath test and stool antigen test (to test for H.pylori)

A

Stool test.

A

Triple therapy: clarithromycin, amoxicillin (metro if allergic to penicillin) and a PPI
* CAP or “PAC that ulcer”

Quadruple Therapy: tetracycline, metro, bismuth subsalicyate and a PPI

When do you start screening with a colonoscopy?

A

Age 45 and do every 10 years with an annual fecal occult blood test

If previous risk factors then start 10 years before diagnosis of family member.

If patient has IBD, ulcerative colitis, or previous radiation of the abdomen, and they need to be tested more frequently.
