What are the different types of gastroenteritis?
Viral: watery, diarrhea, fever
Bacterial: cramping, bloody diarrhea, caused by e.coli, C.Diff, bad hygiene
Protozoal: giardia, “been camping”
What is peptic ulcer disease?
Gastric acid that causes ulcers most commonly responsible cause of PUD is H.Pylori
What are the symptoms of duodenal and gastric ulcers?
Duodenal: burning sensation in between the breast bone and nasal, gets better after eating or taking antacids
Gastric ulcers: worsen with eating usually two hours after a meal (because it’s in the stomach )
What are the ways to diagnose peptic ulcer disease?
EGD
Barium swallow
Urea breath test and stool antigen test (to test for H.pylori)
If a patient is taking over-the-counter omeprazole and you’re trying to diagnose peptic ulcer disease what do you use to test?
Stool test.
If you use a urea breath test this will cause a false negative.
What are the causes of H.pylori?
First cause: NSAID’s
And
Second: Peptic ulcer disease
What are the treatments for H.pylori?
Triple therapy: clarithromycin, amoxicillin (metro if allergic to penicillin) and a PPI
* CAP or “PAC that ulcer”
Quadruple Therapy: tetracycline, metro, bismuth subsalicyate and a PPI

When do you start screening with a colonoscopy?
Age 45 and do every 10 years with an annual fecal occult blood test
If previous risk factors then start 10 years before diagnosis of family member.
If patient has IBD, ulcerative colitis, or previous radiation of the abdomen, and they need to be tested more frequently.
What are symptoms of colorectal cancer?
Changes in bowel habits, bloody stools, abdominal pain, weight loss
Where does colorectal cancer usually occur?
Sigmoid (descending) colon
Which condition is caused by mucosal inflammation limited to the colon?
Ulcerative colitis
Characterized by subacute to chronic bloody diarrhea. Diagnosed confirmed via sigmoidoscopy. Colonoscopy not used early in disease due to risk of colon rupture.
Which condition manifest as Skip lesions throughout the entire G.I. track and is not isolated to the colon?
Crohn’s disease
What are the symptoms of enterobiasis?
Intestinal infection caused by pinworms.
Perianal pruritus noted primarily at night

The tape test:

What is the treatment for enterobiasis?
Mebendazole
