What are symptoms of appendicitis?
Anorexia
nausea and vomiting
low-grade fever
right lower quadrant pain
rebound tenderness
guarding
peri-umbilical pain (McBurneys point) radiate to mid back
When is appendicitis an emergency?
Appendix rupture: symptoms are acute guarding, board like abdomen
What is the Rovsing sign?
Think “reverse” “right”
palpate the left lower quadrant (LLQ) and there will be pain in the right lower quadrant (RLQ)
Means appendicitis
What is the Markle sign?
“Heel drop test”
*megan markle wears heels
Patient stands on toes and drops down suddenly pain in the right lower quadrant (RLQ)
Patient can also hop on one foot
Means appendicitis.
What is the blumberg sign?
Rebound tenderness
When pressure is applied to the abdomen and then released pain will occur.
Means appendicitis
What is mcburneys point?
If pain occurs 2/3 distance from anterior superior iliac spine to the umbilicus
Means appendicitis
What is the obturator sign?
Pain in RLQ when the right thigh is flexed and internally rotated
Means appendicitis
What is the psoas sign?
Patient lying supine and raising right leg agianst resistance.
means appendicitis
