What is cholecystitis?

A

Inflammation of the gallbladder. It can be due to stones that block the tubes

What are symptoms of cholecystitis?

A

Severe pain in right upper quadrant (RUQ) or epigastric pain
vomiting
nausea
usually pain occurs one hour after eating a fatty meal
radiating to the shoulder

What is the diagnostic test for cholecystitis?

A

Ultrasound ( to look for gallstones)

What is the treatment for cholecystitis?

A

Removal or antibiotics

If there are no gallstones, but you still think the patient has cholecystitis. What do you do?

A

Order a HIDA scan! You must still do a CT prior because gallstones cannot be present during a HIDA scan

What is murphys sign?

A

Palpate into subcostal area of right upper quadrant (RUQ) and have patient take a deep breath, and if pain occurs on inspiration and they are positive for cholecystitis.
