Q

Kell Blood Group System:

Name the three (3) common allelic pairs and state which is the low and high frequency of the pair

A

K (low) and k (high)

Q

Summary of the K system:

State three (3) facts

A

Well developed at birth
3rd most immunogenic (only to ABO and D) – anti-K is the most common Ab seen in the lab
Antigens are not affected by enzyme treatment, but are destroyed by DTT, ZZAP, AET (sulfhydryl compounds)

Q

Explain the McLeod Phenotype and what disease is it associated with?

A

K genes are inherited, but no K precursor present – leads to a weakened expression of all K antigens – shorten lifespan of RBC because K precursor is integral protein of the RBC membrane

Q

Duffy Blood Group System:

Five (5) summary items

A

Well developed at birth
Largest disparity of antigen frequency between the races
Fy a-b- is the most common phenotype of AA and is associated with resistance to malaria
Ags are destroyed by enzyme treatment
Fy gene is a variant of Fyb that allows for it to be on the tissues, but not the RBCs

Q

Bad “Kidds”

Explain four (4) facts for this classification

Extra fact listed

A

Notorious for hemolytic delayed TR
May bind C’ and demonstrate in vitro hemolysis
Ab titer often drops to undetectable levels very quickly
Usually found with other abs

Ags are enhanced with enzyme treatment

Q

SSu Blood Group:

A

“Linked” to the MN ags and inherited as a packet
U antigen is “universal”; rare AA blood my be U- (will also be S-s-)
S and s are destroyed by enzyme treatment, U is not
