There are around 200,000 falls related emergency admissions per year
What are the risks for falls?
Falls are multi-factorial and almost anything can cause them

What medication issues can cause falls?
-Polypharmacy
–Psychoactive drugs e.g. benzos
-Drugs that can cause postural hypotension
What is the role of PT/OT in preventing falls?
Improving mobility, balance, strength and confidence
Improving environment to reduce hazards as well as introduce aids such as safety rails
Who should have a falls assessment?
Anyone over 65 who has had one or more falls in the last 12 months, or have conditions which increase risk of falls
What interventions can be offered by specialist falls services?
-Strength and balance training
-Home hazards assessment and intervention
-Vision assessment and referral
-Medication review
