Othello Act 3 PREP Flashcards
Q. Why do we have clowns in Act 3 Scene 1? (Question) ⭐️
: The only reason we have clowns in here is that after a serious scene, there needs to be COMEDIC RELIEF.
In Act 3 Scene 1
“I never knew a Florentine more kind and honest.” (Moment) ⭐️⭐️🔥
Speaker: Cassio
Context: Cassio says he will ask Emilia to help to talk to Desdemona and Iago sends his wife to Cassio to have a conversation with.
Significance: Iago leaves and Cassio says to himself “what a kind and honest man”. Shakespeare is making the case loud and clear that Iago is doing a tremendous job.
In Act 3 Scene 1
“The Moor replies / That he you hurt is of great fame in Cyprus / And great affinity, and that in wholesome wisdom / He might not but refuse you.” (Moment) ⭐️
Speaker: Emilia
Context: Cassio asks Emilia to arrange a meeting with Desdemona.
Significance: Emilia reveals information about the reason that Othello didn’t give Cassio’s job back. Othello’s initial reason for not giving Cassio’s job was because the people were angry. Cassio hurt someone of such a high position, and if the people were angry, they would take the anger out on Othello.
In Act 3 Scene 1
“He shall in strangeness stand no father off / Than in a polite distance.” (Moment) ⭐️
Speaker: Desdemona
Context: Desdemona, Emilia, and Cassio are talking about how Cassio got his job back.
Significance: Desdemona is revealing information that Othello doesn’t have personal problems with Cassio. It’s just a political problem.
“I’ll intermingle everything he does / With Cassio’s suit. Therefore be merry, Cassio, / For thy solicitor shall rather die / Than give thy cause away.” (2 things) ⭐️
1 ) Desdemona says she will not let Othello sleep because she will talk so much about Cassio. Although her intentions are pure, it’s possible that her husband will think she is cheating on him. 2 ) Desdemona said she’d rather die than give up on Cassio.
Q. How does Iago plant seeds of doubt in Othello? (Question) ⭐️
: He is going to say things in a certain way, word choices. Sometimes, when he doesn’t/refuses to say something, it makes Othello stressed out. Ex: asking questions that Othello hasn’t even thought about.
“Why, then, tomorrow night, or Tuesday morn. / On Tuesday noon, or night, or Wednesday morn. / I prithee name the time, but let it not / Exceed three days.” (Moment) ⭐️
Speaker: Desdemona
Context: Desdemona begs Othello to forgive Cassio instead of Cassio.
Significance: Desdemona is annoying and keeps asking when the meeting is. Desdemona gives him a rule of when the meeting will be, and he needs to accept his apology(3 days). This is the general of the army, and he is quite busy, so she should not be making business decisions for him.
What are 2 other ways that Iago makes Othello irritated? (Question) ⭐️
1) He keeps saying what he is going to say is not good for Othello, even though he still hasn’t answered Othello. 2) He says not to believe in everything he says to him because it could be not true.
“Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, Is the immediate jewel of their souls. / Who steals my purse steals trash. ‘Tis something. / nothing: ‘Twas mine, nothing: But he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him and makes me poor indeed.” (Quote) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
Speaker: Iago
Context: Iago suspects Cassio’s dishonorable behavior and hints at knowing more than he’s letting on. Iago was not telling Othello what he wanted to say to Othello, saying it’s not good to say to him.
Significance: You could go take all the money from me. None of the other stuff matters, reputation is all that matters. When someone tries to damage your reputation, it will harm both you and them.
“Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy! / It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock / The meat it feeds on. That cuckold lives in bliss / Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger.” (Quote) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
Speaker: Iago
Context: Iago is talking to Othello and trying to make him think that Desdemona is not faithful to him. Othello loves Desdemona a lot and trusts her, but Iago is making him believe that Desdemona is having a secret relationship with Cassio. Iago pretends to be concerned about Othello but is actually trying to manipulate him.
Significance: This quote talks about how jealousy can harm relationships. It says that if we let jealousy grow, it can make things worse and even ruin the relationship. The quote also suggests that sometimes it might be better not to know if our partner is being unfaithful. The reason Iago is bringing up this idea of jealousy is because it’s the other thing that he does to plant seeds at this moment.
“Exchange me for a goat / When I shall turn the business of my soul / To such exsufflicate and blowed surmises, / Matching thy inference. ‘Tis not to make me jealous / To say my wife is fair” (Quote) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Speaker: Othello
Context: He warns Othello against becoming jealous of Desdemona.
Significance: Othello says he would rather be a goat than feel jealous. This is foreshadowing because of Iago’s plan to make Othello jealous.
“Why, go to then. / She that, so young, could give out such a seeming, To seel her father’s eyes up close as oak, / He thought ‘twas witchcraft. But I am much to blame. / I humbly do beseech you of your pardon / For too much loving you.” (Quote) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Speaker: Iago
Context: He warns Othello against becoming jealous of Desdemona.
Significance: Iago catches himself saying that he is going intense so he says he is too loyal to Othello, saying sorry.
“And yet how nature, erring from itself–” (Quote) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Speaker: Othello
Context: Iago warns Othello against becoming jealous of Desdemona.
Significance: Othello says he still has full confidence in her, but he thinks sometimes people change. It could be that Desdemona is changed, even though he believes in her. He realizes that there’s a chance that something could happen.
“(aside) Why did I marry? This honest creature / doubtless / Sees and knows more, much more, than he unfolds.” (Moment) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Speaker: Othello
Context: Iago warns Othello against becoming jealous of Desdemona.
Significance: Othello is ruminating why he got married because he’s seeing that with marriage came these problems that he wouldn’t be having if he hadn’t gotten married. He also thinks Iago keeps information from him, but not telling him directly because Othello might feel upset.
