Symptoms?
A
- perianal itching, worse at night
- white cotton thread like worms

Referral criteria?
A
- recent travel abroad
- secondary bacterial infection; caused by scratching
- treatment failure

OTC products?
A
- Mebendazole 2+ (ovex); 100mg single dose
- repeat dose 14 days later to prevent re-infection. Treat all family members at the same time
- c/i in pregnant women

Advice?
A
Hygiene measures:
- cut nails short
- wash hands and scrub under nails after visiting loo and before meals
- shower in morning to wash away eggs laid at night
- regularly wash/iron bed linen
- do not share towels
Pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under 2 should follow strict hygeine measures for at least 6 weeks
