Symptoms of measles ?
A
(paramyxo virus - rubeola)
- koplik spots (white spots in mouth/cheek)
- rash starts behind the ears and then spreads to the face. trunk and limb
- red brown confluent (merging or running together) and blotchy rash
- conjunctivitis
- cold-like symptoms
- fever

Symptoms of mumps?
A
(epidermic parotitis - paramyxo virus)
- fever
- headache
- malaise
- swelling on one or both sides of the face (inflammation of the parotid glands)

Symptoms of rubella?
A
(rna virus - german measles)
- lymphadenopathy (swelling of lymph nodes)
- rash starts on the face then spreads to trunks and limbs
- pink-red macular non-confluent rash

Action in all?
A
- all cases of measles, mumps or rubella need referral
- mmr are notifiable diseases
- can provide symptomatic relief: para/ibup

Advice?
A
- plenty of bed rest
- keep hydrated
- keep children off school during contagious period
- avoid acidic drinks in mumps (irritates parotid glands)
- children with rubella should keep away from pregnant women

A
- contagious for 4 days after rash appears

Measles complications?
A
- most dangerous childhood illness
- complications: otitis media, pneumonia, encephalitis

Mumps contagious period?
A
- contagious for 5 days after swelling appears

A
- in adults - risk of meningitis and sterility

Rubella contagious period?
A
- contagious for 6 days after rash appears
