What were the 4 treaties which helped achieve Ostpolitik?
-The Moscow Treaty 1970
-The Warsaw and Prague treaties
-The Four-Power negations over Berlin
-The Basic Treaty 1972
What was the Moscow Treaty 1970?
-The FRG signed a Nuclear non-proliferation Treaty to show its commitment to working with the USSR
-The treaty was signed on the 12th August 1970 by Brant and Brezhnev with the USSR having no territorial claim
-FRG rejected the Hallstein Doctrine accepting both Germanies would become UN members
-German unification would only happen if the USSR stopped propping up the GDR
What were the Warsaw and Prague talks?
-They ran parallel to the talks in Moscow and were completed in December 1970 with no territorial demands
-Oder-neisse line was inviolable with trade from the FRG increasing
-Ethnic Germans from Poland were allowed to migrate to West Germany with similar agreements in Czechoslovakia (resolving Munchic treaty 1938)
What was the Four-Power negotiations over Berlin?
-In March 1970 the 4 powers (Britain, France, USA and USSR) disguised access to Berlin
-Recognised West Berlin’s ties to the FRG and the rights for east Berliners to go to West Berlin
-West Berlin guaranteed free access to the west
-Signed on the 3rd September 1971 with it seen as a milestone achievement
What was the Basic Treaty?
-After the Moscow treaty it allowed for the FRG and GDR to go into direct talks
-Secure the GDR’s position internationally yet would risk closer contact with the FRG
-Signed 1972 where the FRG recognised the GDR as an equal
-Work peacefully for German reunification
What were the consequences of Ostpolitik?
-The existence of 2 Germanys’ seemed permanent
-Both Germanys’ joined the UN in 1973
-GDR’s existence was dependent on the USSR
