frequent, weight-bearing aerobic activity
progressive resistance training 8-12 reps
balance training 20-30 min/day

what do biphosphonates do when treating osteoporosis?
work by binding to bone surfaces where they inhibit osteoclastic absorption
side effects: gi issues, lack of new bone formation, less common
what does raloxifene do when treating osteoporosis?
stimulates estrogen reception and leads to decreased osteoclastic activity
side effects: hot flashes, leg cramps, and peripheral edema
what does teriparatide do when treating osteoporosis?
recombinant human parathyroid hormone
injection
induces bone formation
side effects: dizziness and leg cramps
what does hormone replacement therapy do when treating osteoporosis?
estrogen/progesterone therapy
good results but can increase risk of cancer, cvd, stroke
