A
Unclear patho but may be due to decrease of osteoblasts and increase of osteoclasts
-reabsorption of bones exceeds bone deposition

What is osteoporosis ?
A
A chronic progressive disease of the bones
-bones become brittle & porous & easy to fracture d/to low bone density

Are there symptoms to osteoporosis?

What are the signs of risk for osteoporosis ?
A
- age : >65
- woman
- Native American woman & white woman
- menopause (decreased estrogen )
- family Hx
- long term use of glucocorticoid therapy

Why are woman at risk?
A
- Due to thier small frame =low bone mass
- decreased calcium intake
- increase of bone reabsorption over bone deposition

Management for osteoporosis?
A
Look at catching it before advance stages Look at modifiable factors -nutrition (increase calcium & vit D & green tea) -increase exercise (weight bearing) -prevent fractures -estrogen replacement -quit smoking -decrease alcohol

What are the first signs of osteoporosis?
A
- loss of height
- Lower back pain
- spontaneous fractures
- spinal deformities
