Unclear patho but may be due to decrease of osteoblasts and increase of osteoclasts

-reabsorption of bones exceeds bone deposition

  • age : >65
  • woman
  • Native American woman & white woman
  • menopause (decreased estrogen )
  • family Hx
  • long term use of glucocorticoid therapy

A
  • Due to thier small frame =low bone mass
  • decreased calcium intake
  • increase of bone reabsorption over bone deposition

Management for osteoporosis?

A
Look at catching it before advance stages 
Look at modifiable factors 
-nutrition (increase calcium & vit D & green tea)
-increase exercise (weight bearing) 
-prevent fractures 
-estrogen replacement 
-quit smoking
-decrease alcohol
