Osteoporosis is most common in
Women over 50
Postmenopausal osteoporosis most often impacts
Trabecular bone
Traumatic fracture
From trauma/force
Stress fracture
Overuse/repeated stress
Pathological fracture
Low energy fracture
Caused by disease
Often associated with cancer metastases
Osteoporotic fracture
Fragility or low trauma fracture
Occurs with minimal trauma
If disease causing is osteoporosis
Osteoporosis
Chronic, progressive disease characterized by:
low bone mass
impaired bone quality
decreased bone strength
enhanced risk of fractures
Primary osteoporosis
Comes on on its own
Idiopathic
Postmenopausal (50-60 years)
Involuntary/senile (>70 years)
Secondary osteoporosis
Comes on because of another reason
Result of another primary condition
Side effect of medication
Clinical signs and symptoms of osteoporosis
Pain: inc with prolonged sitting, dec with side lying
Posture: inc thoracic curve, dec lordotic curve
When to use Z score
In premenopausal women, men less than 50 years, and children
Below -2.0 = less bone mass than someone your age
When to use T score
Postmenopausal women and men over 50 years
-2.5 or less = osteoporosis
Most common fracture sites in osteoporosis
- Vertebrae (most often T7-8, T12-L1)
From postural changes - Femoral neck
FOOSH - Distal radius/ulna
