- immunosuppression (meds / HIV)
- infective endocarditis
what does non-haematogenous osteomyelitis result from?
contiguous spread of infection from adjacent soft tissues to the bone or from direct injury / trauma to the bone, often polymicrobial
what is the most common form of osteomyelitis in adults?
non-haematogenous osteomyelitis
what are the risk factors for non-haematogenous osteomyelitis?
- diabetic foot ulcers / pressure sores
- DM
- peripheral arterial disease
what is the most common causative organism for osteomyelitis?
staph. aureus
what is the predominating species causing osteomyelitis in pts with sickle-cell anaemia?
salmonella species
what is the imaging modality of choice for osteomyelitis?
MRI
what is the mx of osteomyelitis?
- flucloxacillin for 6 weeks
- clindamycin if penicillin-allergic
