bone disease Flashcards
what is Pagets?
focal bone resorption followed by excessive and chaotic bone deposition
what bony parts does Pagets affect?
in order: spine, skull, pelvis and femur
what lab ix findings can be seen in Pagets?
raised serum ALP
other parameters normal
what can be seen on XR for Pagets?
abnormal, thickened sclerotic bone
for Pagets, what does having >15% bony involvement put pts at higher risk of?
cardiac failure
what other risk is Pagets associated with?
small risk of sarcomatous change
how is Pagets treated?
bisphosphonates
what is osteoporosis?
excessive bone resorption resulting in demineralised bone
what does osteoporosis increase the risk of?
pathological fracture
what lab ix findings can be seen in osteoporosis?
ALP normal, calcium normal
how is osteoporosis treated?
bisphosphonates, calcium and vitamin D
what do secondary bone tumours cause?
bone destruction and tumour infiltration
what is the scoring system used to predict risk of fracture by secondary bone tumours?
Mirel scoring
what are the appearances of secondary bone tumours like?
depends on the primary
e.g. sclerotic - prostate
lytic - breast
what lab ix findings can be seen for secondary bone tumours?
elevated serum calcium and ALP
