refers to bone infection almost always caused by bacteria which can destroy bone (In-111 used to find this)
symptoms
high fever, pain over limb, red/warm/tender
conditions that incr risk
injury, diabetes, surgery to bony areas,
bacteria causing infection and how it gets to bone

-2 main ways
if on surface of bone-> quickly forms bone abscess but will spread once in BM
a- bloodstream
b- infected tissue
what % caused by staph and spread via bloodstream

what %spread via adjacent infected soft tissue
50% of these have staph
2 types of osteomyelitis are
acute- develops and peaks over short time period
chronic- long term infection
dx osteomyelitis
blood test, blood culture, bone/WBC scan, MRI
treatment of osteomyelitis
-antibiotics (vancomycin)
-surgery (drain pus/ clean infected area)
-vitamin supplements (vit A/C help immune system
-prognosis
