What causes Osteomalacia? (2)

A

Vitamin-D deficiency or Calcium deficiency causes insufficient mineralisation.

What is the function of Vitamin-D?

A

Stimulates the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the gut. (Making them available for bone mineralisation.)

  • Bone Pain - Increased risk of falling - Muscle weakness (from Vit-D Deficiency)

    • Elbow & Wrist joints
    • Bones
    • Ankles
  • Odd:
    • Spine curvature
    • Rib bones

  • Bloods (diagnostic)
  • X-Ray
  • DEXA Scan
