What is osteomalacia known as in children?

Rickets

What causes Osteomalacia? (2)
A
Vitamin-D deficiency or Calcium deficiency causes insufficient mineralisation.

What is the function of Vitamin-D?
A
Stimulates the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the gut. (Making them available for bone mineralisation.)

What is the presentation of Osteomalacia? (3)
A
- Bone Pain - Increased risk of falling - Muscle weakness (from Vit-D Deficiency)

How does Rickets present in paediatric patients?

- Stunted Growth
- Wide:
- Elbow & Wrist joints
- Bones
- Ankles
- Odd:
- Spine curvature
- Rib bones
- Shaped legs
- Large:
- Forehead
- Abdomen

What investigations do we conduct for suspected osteomalacia or rickets? (3)
A
- Bloods (diagnostic)
- X-Ray
- DEXA Scan
N.B. Clinical Examination is important.

- Vitamin rich foods
- Vitamin D-Supplements
- Oral
