How is Vitamin D created?
From cholesterol by skin in response to UV radiation
Who is at higher risk of vitamin d deficiency?
Malabsorption disorders eg IBD
Chronic Kidney Disease
What is Vitamin D essential for in absorption?
Calcium and Phophate absorption in intestines and reabsorption in kidneys
Low calcium can lead to what happening to parathyroid hormone?
Increased parathyroid hormone causing secondary hyperparathyrodism
Investigations for Osteomalacia?
Serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D
Bloods for Calcium, Phosphate and Alk Phos and Parathyroid Hormone
What may xrays show in osteomalacia?
Osteopenia (radiolucent bones)
Treating Osteomalacia?
Colcacliferol (Vitamin D3)
