osteology Flashcards
where do the two maxilla bones fuse
intermaxillary suture
what parts does the maxilla consist of?
body, frontal, zygomatic, alveolar, palatal processes
What does the body of the mandible contain
air filled sinuses
what is each tooth covered with?
A bony eminence that corresponds to its roots- canine eminence is prominent
Where is the infraorbital foramen?
Distal to the canine eminence and superior to canine fossa, approximately 2cm below mid infraorbital rim
Describe bone of the cortical plate.
thin- paper thin in some areas, sometimes absent, cancellous, infiltration done through it.
Where is the greater palatine foramen located (adults and children)
at apex of maxillary 3rd molar in adults, apex of maxillary 2nd molar in children. About 1cm from the gingival margin.
What bony eminence may slow/inhibit spread of solution to the apical region of the 16 & 26?
The zygomatic buttress
What are some anatomical considerations in maxillary anaesthesia?
- Position of root apices (central incisors/canine-buccally, lat incisors- palatally)
- crossover nerve supply
- length of roots
Describe the cortical plates of the mandible.
- Buccal cortical plate v dense in adults
- Labial cortical plate near incisors less dense+more porous and therefore allows infiltration
Describe the ramus of the mandible.
-lateral surface: thick
- medial surface: contain mandibular foramen
Describe the body of the mandible
buccal side: thick cortical bone- anteriorly less thick, mental foramen
lingual side: thick bone, some cases lingual foramina located near posterior molar region and incisor region
how does the position of the mental foramen change with age?
child- far down 1/3
adult- middle 1/2
elder far up
