Osteoarthritis Flashcards

1
Q

Q

What is osteophyte. Explain how they form

A

Formation is initiated by proliferation of periosteal cells at the joint margin that differentiate into chondrocytes.

Subsequent endochondral ossification produces an enlarging bony protrusion.

Osteophytes grow in the path of least resistance guided by capsular traction.
