Osteoarthritis Flashcards
Define OA. principle in pathogenesis of OA
OA is a complex degenerative disorder of the entire synovial joint characterized by progressive loss of articular cartilage and subchondral bone remodelling.
Biochemical changes seen in ECM of OA cartilage
Loss of proteoglycans and reduced aggregation
Reduced quality and integrity of the collagen network
Increase in water content
Biomechanical changes
What is osteophyte. Explain how they form
Formation is initiated by proliferation of periosteal cells at the joint margin that differentiate into chondrocytes.
Subsequent endochondral ossification produces an enlarging bony protrusion.
Osteophytes grow in the path of least resistance guided by capsular traction.
Biological mechanism involved in development of OA
