Meniscus Flashcards
Anatomical difference of Medial and lateral meniscus
MM: Asymmetric C-shape
LM: Semicircular in shape with anterior and posterior horns attaching closer than MM
Blood supply of meniscus
Superior and inferior branches of lateral, medial and middle genicular arteries
Peri meniscus capillary plexus supply peripheral border of menisci
Histology of meniscus
70% water
Type 1 collagen (90%)
Function of meniscus
Load transmission across knee - 85-90% in flexion, 50-70% in extension
AP stabilisation of knee- in ligamentously compromised knee
Enhancement of articular conformity
Distribution of synovial fluid across articular surface
Proprioception
When to repair for meniscus tear
Significant pain/ mechanical symptoms eg: Catching/ locking
Location: Large tear >1cm located in red-red zone, and some tears in red-white zone
Tissue quality: Not macerated/ severely degenerated
Concomitant injury: Planned for ACL reconstruction
