OSPE Passive Stretches Flashcards
What is the technique of passive movements?
Hold Stretch for 30-60 Seconds and repeat x3 times
Stretch slowly - slow and controlled movement until stretched position is reached
What are the principles of stretching?
warm up before Stretching
Stretch before and after exercise
Stretch gently and slowly
Stretch to the point of tension but not pain
Upper Trapezius Muscle (Right)
Back lying, head a bit off plinth in physio’s hand
→ Head and neck freked - latelal fIexison (left)
→ Rotation to the right (Ipsilaterally)
→Stabalize shoulder girdle and trunk with right arm
Middle Trapezius (right)
Back lying or side lying, pillow below head
→ Arm horizontally flexed - to protract the scapula
→ PT assists by curling fingertips around medial border of scapula and pulling
Lower Trapezius Muscle (right)
Back lying or side lying, pillow below head
→ Horizontal flexion but arm going in an upwards direction
→ to protract and elevate the scapula
Rhomboids Muscle (right)
Back lying (supine)
→ arm in horizontal flexion
→ P T assit scapular protraction and depression by curling fingers around medial border and pulling arm horizontally and a bit downwards
Levator scapulae (right)
Back lying, head off plinth in physio’s hand
→ Neck is flexed, laterally flexed (left)
→ Rotation to the left (contralaterally)
→ Stabalice shoulder girdle and trunk with your arm
Pectoralis Major (Sternal head)
Back lying, pillow under head - laying towards the edge
→ abduction of shoulder up to 120° with lateral rotation
→ Elbow, wrist and fingers in extension
→ Forearm in supination
→ Stabilize trunk on opposite side
Pectoralis Major (claviculor head)
Back lying, pillow under head - laying toward the edge
→ abduct shoulder up to 90° with lateral rotation
→ Elbow, wrist and fingers in extension
→ forearm in supination
→ Stabilize trunk on opposite side
Pectoralis Minor
Back lying,head on pillow
→ push the shoulders down into the bed in the direction of retraction
Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) (right)
supine, head off plinth a bit and held by physio
→ left horizontal flexion of H and N
→ Rotation to the right (H and N)
→ extend lower neck but tuck the chin
Scalene (right)
Supine, head off plinth in physio’s hand
→ Extension of neck
→ left lateral flexion
→ Rotate neck to the right
Biceps brackii
Back lying
→ Extension of elbow
→ pronation and shoulder extension
→ Stabalice shoulder with one hand
→ other hand pulls on forearm to increase shoulder extension
Triceps brachii
supine
→ shoulder flexion with elbow in flexion
→ PT increases stretch while maintaining elbow flexion
Flexors of the fingers
Back lying - half lying - sitting
→ supination and extension of wrist and fingers
Flexors of the forearm
Back lying - half lying - sitting
> forearm in supination
> elbow and wrist extension
> arm as close as possible to the side of the body
> fingers not in extension
> PT Stabalice arm, pillow under elbow to keep extension
Stretch of extensor group
> Do flexion and ulnar deviation with wrist flexion of R hand
Therapist Stabilize patients forearm and anon pillow to maintain elbow extension
Latissimus Dorsi (right)
Side lying
→ PT pulls arm into shoulder flexion
→ latered rotation
→ Horizontal flexion across the body over the head
Quadratus Lumborum
side lying
→ Top leg hanging off bed
→ behind the patient PT push down on distal lateral thigh of R leg and upwards on the thorax
Illiopsoas
side lying,with bottom leg flexed
→extension of the hip with knee in extension
→ Stabalize the pelvis
OR
Back lying,legs of the bed
→ Bend Left hip
→push down R hip down into extension
Gluteus Maximus Stretch
Back lying
→ flex R hip up towards the chest
→ knee in flexion
→ If you bring the hip straight upto the same side shoulder (lower fibers)
→ If you bring the hip up to the opposite side shoulder (upper fibers)
Gluteus Medius and Minimus Stretch
side lying
→ abduct the hip behind the bottom leg
→ Stabalice the pelvis
Piriformis Stretch
Back lying
→ hip flexed
→Abduction
→ laterally rotated
Hamstrings
Back lying
→ flexion of hip with knee in extension
