Effects of cold HEMODYNAMIC
Initially vasoconstriction (decrease in blood flow)
Later cold induced vasodilation
Effects of cold NEUROMUSCULAR
Decrease in nerve conduction velocity
Increase in pain threshold
Decrease muscle spasm and post injury oedema
Changes in muscle strength
Decreased spasticity
Facilitation of muscle contraction
Effects of cold METABOLIC
Decrease in metabolic rate
can control acute inflammation but will delay healing
What are therapeutic uses of cryotherapy and indications?
Control inflammation
Reduce Oedema - due to acute inflammation
Pain relief
decrease tissue temperature
Decrease spasticity
Management of MS symptomes
Facilitation
Contraindications of cold pack
Cold hypersensitivity
cold Intolerance
Cryoglobulinemia
Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria
Raynaud’s disease
over regenerating peripheral nerves
impaired circulation or pe rip herald vascular disease
What to ask the patient
Do you have unusual responses to cold?
Do you develop rush when you are cold?
Do you have severe pain, numbness or colour changes of your fingers when exposed to cold?
Do you see blood in your urine after being cold?
Do you have any nerve damage in the area? pins and needles
Do you have any numbness or tingling in this area?
Do you have poor circulation in this area?
Precautions of a cold pack
Over a superficial main branch of a nerve
over a open wound
Hypertension
Poor sensation or mentation
very young and very old
What are the dangers of cold packs?
Tissue damage
Preparation of the patient and application
Examine skin
Test skin sensation
Test outcome measure
Position 45° above heart level
Apply cold pack with one layer of damp towel
Hold in place with vecro and wrap with another towel
Treatment time 10-20 minutes every 1-2 hours
Remove cold pack, examine skin and test outcome measure
provide home advice

in groin - 5 cm below top of inner leg (not over Clothes)
10 cm above superior border of patella
Outcome measure of Oedema on the Leg
10 cm below interior border of patella
20 cm below inferior border of patella

This is a cold pack treatment,you should a cool cold Sensantion,If you feel that the cold is too much or concentrated to one area,causing you to feel numb on the area please tell me as It could lead to tissue damage.During the treatment please don’t move or touch anything .
