Osmosis/equations/membrane Flashcards
Phospholipid
The main structural element of the cell membrane, made from phosphate and Lipid(fat)
Hydrophobic
Repelled or hates water.
Hydrophilic
Is attracted to water
Concentration Gradient
The level of concentration of a particular molecule or particle with in a cell
Surface Area
Total area on the outside of a cell.
B x W x (No. of sides)
Volume
The amount of space inside a cell
B x H x W
Passive
Does not use energy
Active Transport
Uses energy to move larger substances though channel proteins
Diffusion
Molecules moving from a high concentration to a low in their container
Facilitated Diffusion
The passive movement of substances through integral proteins.
Osmosis
Water molecules diffusing through a semi-permeable membrane from a high concentration to a low, (Hypo = water moving in), (Hyper = water moving out), (Isotonic = equal)
Semi-permeable
Only allows certain things through.
Exocytosis
Substances leaving the cell in a vesicle
Endocytosis
Substances entering the cell in a vesicle
Intergral Protein
A big chunk of protein embedded into the membrane to allow for substances in a vesicle to be let in and out in an active process.
