Osmosis and Diffusion Flashcards
What is osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of a region of higher water potential to a lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane.
What is Diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration as a result of random movement.
How does the surface area affects the rate of diffusion ?
The larger the surface area, the faster the the rate of diffusion
How does the distance affect the rate of diffusion
The shorter the distance the faster the diffusion
How does the steepness of a concentration gradient affect the rate of diffusion
The bigger the difference, the steeper the concentration gradient and the faster the molecules of a substance will diffuse.
When does diffusion occur?
When there is a concentration gradient.
What is the direction of net movement?
It is down the concentration gradient. from high concentration to low conecentration.
Give a example of diffusion with villi
Digested food diffuses into the villi
When does a potato strip become shorter?
When potato cells lose water due to osmosis
When does a potato strip become longer?
When the potato strip gain water from osmosis.
Why does the potato lose mass when in sugar solution?
because water moves from a high concentration to a low concentration therefore the water in the potato moves to the sugar solution.
What happens if the potato is put in a solution with equal water potential?
nothing occurs, osmosis wont occur.
Definition of turgid.
Turgid means swollen and hard
Definition of plasmolyces
Shrinking of cells
Definition of crenated
Net movement of water out of animal cell
