Q

Define osmosis?

A

The passage of water from a region where it has a higher water potential to a region where it has a lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane. (Water moves into an area of high substrate concentration)

Q

How does water move through the cell surface membrane?

A

Water is polar therefore can travel through a channel protein but it mostly occurs via diffusion as it is such a small molecule.

Q

Summary of osmosis?

A

An example of a molecule transported is water, it occurs down a concentration gradient, it occurs in both direction and doesn’t require proteins or ATP.
