Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis =
High WP to low WP
Define osmosis?
The passage of water from a region where it has a higher water potential to a region where it has a lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane. (Water moves into an area of high substrate concentration)
What is Water Potential?
W.P is the pressure created by water molecules.
Under standards conditions of 25*C and 100kPa what WP does pure water have?
Zero, as it gets less watery the number representing it gets more negative.
How does water move through the cell surface membrane?
Water is polar therefore can travel through a channel protein but it mostly occurs via diffusion as it is such a small molecule.
How would you investigate the WP of plant tissue?
The potato experiment
Does osmosis require ATP?
No
Summary of osmosis?
An example of a molecule transported is water, it occurs down a concentration gradient, it occurs in both direction and doesn’t require proteins or ATP.
