Assessed Practicals Flashcards
Investigation into the effect of a name variable on the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction.
- RoR of an enzyme reaction changes at different temperatures, pH’s, enzyme and substrate concentration and the presence of competitive and non-competitive inhibitors.
- Floating potatoes discs experiment.
Preparation of stained squashes of cells from plant root tips, set up and use of microscope to identify stages of mitosis.
Stain the cells so can view it under the microscope. Use the root tip and that is where mitosis is taking place, where plant is growing. Squash the cells to separate and spread out the cells but don’t push sideways or it will break the chromosomes.
Production of a dilution series of a solute to produce a calibration curve with which to identify the water potential of plant tissue.
Potato weight experiment, find the WP of the potato by seeing at which concentration of sucrose the potato didn’t gain or lose weight by plotting a graph and look the value up in a table
Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the permeability of cell surface membranes.
Effect of alcohol on leakage of pigment from beetroot cells experiment.
Wash and dry beetroot to ensure any excess pigment has been removed from outside of the beetroot.
Permeability increases with the construction of ethanol as the higher the ethanol the more the CSM breaks down so more pigment leaks though.
Permeability increases with temperature as they higher ether temperature the more of the CSM breaks down.
Dissection of animal or plant gas exchange or mass transport system or of an organ within such system.
Heart experiment, fish experiment, plant potometer experiment.
Use of aspectic techniques to investigate the effect of antimicrobial substances on microbial growth.
Determine the optimum concentration of a disinfectant by doing a serial dilution and testing each on many times.
Distilled water is used as a control.
