Osmosis Flashcards
What’s osmosis?
Net movement of water from an area of high concentration of water molecules, to an area of lower concentration of water molecules, through a partially permeable membrane = until equilibrium is reached.
What’s hypertonic water?
A solution that has a higher concentration of solutes (salt or sugar) than the cytoplasm of a cell.
Which way does the water move in hypertonic water?
Water moves out of the cell into the surrounding solution to balance the solute concentrations.
Effects on a cell due to hypertonic water:
Shrink due to water loss
Process=Crenation
Summary of hypertonic water:
Water moves out of the cell = leading to dehydration & shrinkage of the cell.
What’s hypotonic water?
Solution that has a lower concentration of solutes (salt or sugar) than thecytoplasm of a cell.
Which way does the water move in a hypotonic solution?
Water moves into the cell from the surrounding solution to balance the solute concentrations.
Effects on the cell due to hypotonic water:
Cells swell and may burst due to excessive water intake.
