osmosis Flashcards
osmosis
the process of water moving across a semi-permeable membrane to an area of higher solute concentration.
semi-permeable membrane
a membrane that is selectively permeable to only certain molecules.
phospholipid bilayer
two layers of molecules that make up most of the cell membrane.
Hydrophilic
water loving head
hydrophobic
water fearing tail
diffusion
the movement of molecules from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.
○ ex: lit scented candle.
homeostasis
stable state of the cell’s internal environment.
solution
a mixture of two or more substances, which may be solids, liquids, or gases.
○ ex: salt water
solute
a substance(salt) dissolved in another substance(water) usually the component of the solution present in a lesser amount.
○ ex, in salt water, the solute is salt.
