euglena Flashcards
euglena
have the ability to be both heterotrophic(must consume food) or autotrophic(make own food with their chloroplasts through photosynthesis).
phototaxis
the movement of an organism or a cell toward or away from a source of light.
chloroplast
the food producers of the cell.
photosynthesis
the process of which plants convert energy of the sun(carbon dioxide from the atmosphere) and water into sugars and oxygen.
heterotrophic
must consume food because they can’t produce it on its own.
autotrophic
can make its own food through photosynthesis.
euglena anatomical parts:
○ Flagellum: a long whip-like structure that acts like a little motor.
○ Stigma: eye spot; detect light and helps the euglena find bright areas to gather sunlight to make their food.
○ Nucleus
○ Chloroplasts: trap sunlight that is used for photosynthesis.
○ cell membrane: euglena can also gain nutrients through this.
