osmosis Flashcards
define the term ‘osmosis’
osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from a region of high water potential [dilute solution] to a region of lower water potential [concentrated solution], through a partially permeable membrane.
turgid
when the plant cell absorbs a lot water and becomes firm
plasmolysis
when the plant cell loses water to a solution with low water potential [highly concentrated solution] and the cell membrane begins to suck into the plant cell.
flaccid
when plant cells lose water to highly concentrated solutions
isotonic
medium concentration solution
the cell cytoplasm is at the same level as the water in the solution surrounding it.
hypotonic
low concentration solution/ high water solution
turgid
define the term ‘crenation’
when an animal cell gains water from a highly concentrated solution and bursts
define the term ‘lysis’
when an animal cell loses water to a solution with low water potential / low water concentration/ a hypertonic solution.
where does osmosis occur in a plant and what does it do?
osmosis occurs in the root of a plant and it absorbs water from the soil into the roots.
what would happen if a plant relied on diffusion to absorb minerals?
the cell would be drained from its minerals as it would travel down the concentration gradient.
