leaf structure Flashcards
upper epidermis
found at the top of the leaf and is a thin and transparent layer to permit light to go in
wax cuticle
protective waxy layer on top of leaves to prevent evaporation of water.
palisade layer
cylindrical shapes packed with chloroplasts found at the top of a cell to maximize photosynthesis (by absorbing more light).
spongy mesophyll
contains large air spaces between cells to permit diffusion between cells (palisade cells and stomata). light intensity must be high for it to reach here
lower epidermis
contains guard cells and stomata
guard cell
absorbs or loses water to open (flaccid) or close (turgid) the stomata to allow carbon dioxide in and out.
stomata
location of gas exchange in a plant. opens in the day and closes in the night.
vascular bundle
contains the xylem and phloem vessels.
xylem
found in the middle of the phloem and transports water around th eplant
phloem vessels
surround the xylem vessels and transports nutrients around the plant.
