Osmolarity & pH Flashcards
What is the difference between osmolarity and osmolality?
-
Why does necrosis cause cells to swell and burst?
A failure in the Na/K ATPase pump - Na is not pumped out of the cell adequately, and so collects in the cell - this causes water to be drawn into the cell, eventually causing it to burst
What is normal plasma osmolality?
290 mOsmol/kg
What is the formula for calculating pH?
pH = -log[H+]
What type of scale is the pH scale?
Logarithmic
What is normal plasma pH?
7.36-7.44
What does abnormal plasma pH normally originate from?
A major organ dysfunction (commonly the lungs, kidney, or liver)
What is the pH of pure water?
7.0
What is gastric pH?
1.5-3.5
What are the average plasma (extracellular) levels of Na and K?
Na - 140
K - 5
