OSI Network Flashcards
Explain the Application layer
The Application layer is the end user layer and offers services to applications such as web browsing, email,l and filer transfer. Protocols include HTTP and DNS.
Explain the Presentation layer
The Presentation later translates data between the application layer and network layers, including encryption, decryption, compression and translation. Protocols included SSL and ASCII.
Explain the Session later
The Session layer manages sessions between application, establishing, maintaining and terminating connections. Protocols include API
Explain the Transport layer
The Transport layer ensures the complete transfer of data with error checking and data flow control. Protocols include TCP
Explain the Network layer
The Network later determines the best path to move data from its source to destination and handles packet forwarding. Protocols included IP and ICMP
Explain the Data Link layer
The Data Link layer handles error detection and correction from the physical layer and provides node-to-node transfer. Protocols include MAC and Ethernet
Explain the Physical layer
The Physical layer transmits raw bit streams over a physical medium e.g. cables, hubs and repeaters
What is a Switch?
Switches operate on the Data Link layer. They allow multiple computers to connect to a network through a single node, reducing wiring. They efficiently and intelligently forward data frames within LANs based on MAC.
