Network Stuff Flashcards
What is a Switch?
A Switch receives data from one device and forwards it to the correct destination within the network using MAC addresses
What is a Hub?
A Hub is a basic network device used to connect multiple devices within a LAN network. Sends data to all devices, high risk of collision domain
What is a Bridge?
A Bridge connects and filters traffic between two or more network segments. They manage traffic and reduce collisions by dividing the network into segments
What is a Router?
A Router connects multiple devices and directs data traffic between them
What is Collision Domain?
A network segment where data risks colliding with each other on a shared medium that happens when two or more devices attempt to send data simultaneously
How is Collision Domain reduced?
Each port on a Switch operates independently (doesn’t go to every device.) Bridges segment parts of the network, dividing it into more manageable segments that forward data only when needed.
How does Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) avoid Collision Domain?
It is when a node verifies the absence of other traffic before transmitting on a shared transmission medium
