What is layer 1 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Physical
Network devices and transmission media.
What is layer 2 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Data-link
Control of access, error checking and correction.
What is layer 3 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Network
Transmission of the actual data packets and routing.
What is layer 4 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Transport
Concerned with keeping track of segments of a network, checking successful transmission and packetisation.
What is layer 5 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Session
Looks after starting, managing and ending a session. Provides for simplex, half-duplex and full duplex transmission methods.
What is layer 6 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Presentation
Looks after any conversations between data as sent on the network and data as it is needed by the applications. This layer often handles encryption/decryption.
What is layer 7 of the OSI Model responsible for?
Application
The layer closes to the user. It collects or delivers data and passes it to and from the presentation layer.
