osi model Flashcards
What does Data Link layer do
Combines packets into bytes and bytes into frames. Provides access to media using MAC address. Performs error detection, not correction
What does Physical layer do
Move bits between devices. Specifies voltage, wire speed, and pin-out of cables. Sends bits
What does Network layer do
Provides logical addressing which routers use for path determination. Sends packets.
What does Transport Layer do
Provides reliable or unreliable delivery. Performs error correction before retransmit. Segments and reassembles data into a data stream. Sends segments.
What does Session Layer do
Keeps different applications’ data separate. Controls ports and maintains session.
What does Presentation Layer do
Presents data and handles processing such as encryption
What does Application Layer do
Provides a user interface
