Osha/infection Control Flashcards
Mode of transmission
How the pathogen is transmitted from the reservoir to someone else.
Examples of modes of transmission
Physical contact, droplets (from sneeze or cough), common vehicle (contaminated source like food or water), food borne, and vector (infected animal), active carrier (someone with active illness) , passive carrier (someone who dosent wash their hands after helping an infected person)
Methods of prevention
Vaccinations prevent a person from becoming a susceptible host to a number of diseases. Vaccinations provide immunity.
Infection prevention
Barriers (gloves), hand hygiene (proper hand washing), face masks, cough etiquette.

Isolation Precaution
Proper hand hygiene and wearing gloves, use of masks, respiratory protection, eyewear and face shields, use of PPE, handling and disposing linen properly, cleaning/disposing eating utensils and dishes, patient placement (in private room), protective transportation of an infected patient, use and care of equipment (needles and such), routine and terminal cleaning of the patients environment (use of disinfectants)
Proper PPE in order
Hand washing, gown, mask/respirator, goggles/face shield, gloves.
PPE
Personal Protective Equipment
Various barriers and respirators used alone or in combo to protect the skin, eyes, airways, and clothing from contact with infectious agents. Also known as gloves, respirators, masks, face shields, goggles, shoe covers, caps and gowns.
Removal of PPE
Remove gloves from inside and pull off and discard, untie gown and remove by peeling it away from your body, remove eyewear by using clean band at back or ears, remove mask by the ear loops, and wash hands.
Hand washing
Wash for 40 to 60 seconds with ordinary soap and water.
Fire safety
RACE. Rescue Alarm Confine Fire and Extinguish.
Rescue individuals in danger, alarm, confine fire (close doors and windows), and extinguish fire with fire extinguisher.
First aid
Medical attention that is usually administered immediately after the injury occurs and at the location it occurred. Wash hands, do not remove any penetrating objects, place a sterile bandage or clean linen over the wound and apply direct pressure, add more if bleeding continues. Don’t move the injured body part, if an arm or leg is profusely bleeding raise it over the heart, do not move the person unless necessary, and take steps to prevent shock.
Electrical/Radiation Safety
Verify power cords are in good condition always, avoid use of extension cords, use 3 pronged plugs when available, notify supervisor of any problem.
Time, the less time spent the less radiation, lead shield will block radiation, distance will decrease possibility of radiation.
