OSHA electrical Flashcards
What are the two main electrical injury categories?
Direct (electrocution) and Indirect (falls, cuts etc.)
Briefly review electrical terms, such as current:
electrical movement measured in amps
electrical terms: resistance
restriction to electrical flow
Electrical terms: conductors:
Metals and other materials that let electricity pass easily.
Electrical terms grounding:
a conductive connection to the earth which acts as a protective measure
Electrical insulators:
Materials like glass, porcelain, plastic, and dry wood have high resistance to electricity. This means they block electricity and stop it from reaching places it shouldn’t.
Good people prefer really dry air
What is the difference between volt, ohms and amps? think of water
Volts = possible amount of pressure (pressure of water)
OHMS = resistance (size of the pipe)
Amps = is the actual current flow (flow of water)
How does low voltage affect the muscles?
muscles contract
What does ‘1000 milliamps’ stand for?
Effect of electricity on humans which can cause a 100-watt bulb to light up
T/F Overhead lines are typically not insulated.
true
T/F Operators are normally safer if they stay in the equipment.
true
Give some examples of equipment that can contact powerlines?
1)cranes -> crazy
2), ladder, ->lazy
3)scaffold, ->squirrels
4)excavator, ->eat
5)scissor lifts, -> sweer
6)forklift ->foods
What is the requirement for clearance in electrical room?
3 ft of clearance in front of the switch gear must have a clear path
What is the minimum gauge for extension cords used in Construction?
12 Gauge minimum wire size
Understand lock-out/tag out (LOTO). What is it? Should a tag accompany the locked device indicating that it should not be turned on?
LOTO is a safety procedure that should have a tag with your information and should have a locked device indicating it should not be turned on
What is the best way to work on energized electrical equipment?
DON’T unless you’re qualified
