Oscillation Flashcards
Define resonance
It is the phenomenon in which there is a maximum transfer of energy from the driver to the oscillating system in a forced oscillation.
The oscillating system achieves maximum amplitude during resonance
For an undamped system, it occurs when driving frequency equals to natural frequency of the oscillating system. (Include this in definition if its 2-3m)
What are the 2 conditions that must be satisfied for a particle performing SHM?
- acceleration is directly proportional to the displacement from equilibrium position
- acceleration is always directed towards the equilibrium position OR direction of acceleration is always opposite to displacement
Why should a car suspension system be critically damped?
-It enables the system to partially absorb the impact of a bump in the road for the comfort of passengers
-it enables the car to quickly return to its equilibrium so that it is ready to respond to other bumps further down the road.
