Measurements Flashcards
How to reduce random error?
It can be reduced by taking a large number of independent readings of a quantity and taking the average
How to eliminate zero error?
Correct the zero error by simple addition or subtraction of this error for subsequent errors.
What is systematic error?
Systematic error is one that occurs according to some fixed rule or pattern such that they yield a consistent over estimation or under estimation of a true value of a measured quantity.
What is random error?
Random error is one that occurs without a fixed pattern such that a set of measurements done under the same conditions have an equal likely chance of being greater or less than the true value.
Definition of uncertainty
Uncertainty is an estimate of systematic and/or random errors inherent in the measurement or calculation.
When values are plotted on a graph, what kind of error does it reduce?
Random error
note: values are plotted on a graph and need to draw best fit line
What is the definition of a reading?
Reading is a single determination of value of unknown quantity.
