GENERAL
Sanitize hands JUST PRIOR to starting the PE
Verbalize what you are doing
VITALS
Recheck any abnormal vital signs (EXCEPT TEMPERATURE)
FOR GIBSON
- check pulse (118)
- check RR (24)
FOR TELEMANN
-RR slightly on the higher end (18)
HEENT
Check oral pharynx with a light source
NECK
Check for anterior/posterior cervical lymph nodes
PULMONARY
Auscultate - 6 posterior and 2 anterior areas of lung
Percuss - 6 posterior and 2 anterior areas of lung
CV
Palpate the PMI
Auscultate all 4 major cardiac listening areas (bell and diaphragm)
Check at least 1 peripheral pulse (Bilat)
Check for lower extremity edema (Bilat)
ADBOMEN
Auscultate Bowel Sounds in 4 Quadrants
Auscultate at least 1 Abdominal Vascular structure(s) (Aorta, Iliacs, Renals) for bruits
Palpate Abdomen in 4 Quads (light and deep palpation)
Palpate/Percuss for CVA tenderness
COMMUNICATION
Summarize your findings to the patient
Provide an Assessment of your findings to the patient
Ask if patient has any questions or concerns
Use language that the patient understands
Treat the patient with respect
Dress professionally
