What is sleep apnoea?
Stopping of breathing for more than 10 seconds when asleep due to narrowing of the airway
What is sleep hypopnoea?
breathing for less than 50% capacity for more than 10 seconds while asleep due to airway restriction
What are symptoms and what is the key symptom?
Key - Tiredness and falling asleep at inappropriate times
Snoring
Irritability
loss of libido
Nocturia
Vivid dreams
Night sweats
Why do people with OSA often get headaches in the morning?
Because they have increased levels of c02
Who is more at risk, male or females?
Male
What is the biggest risk factor?
Obesity
What are the risk factors?
Large neck
Smoking
Acromegaly
Why is hypothyroid a risk factor?
Decreased neural flow to the airway
What age does it commonly occur?
40s-60s as this is when the tiredness starts to affect you
What is the only way to definitively diagnose OSA?
A sleep study
What are some of the consequences of OSA?
Death
Sexual dysfunction
Hypertension, AF and Ischaemic heart disease
What diseases are made better by the curing of OSA?
Diabetes
Poor libido
hypertension
Why does OSA make diabetes worse?
The stress causes an increase in levels of cathecholamines (adrenaline) which decreases the response to insulin
What is the management of OSA?
CPAP
Continuous positive airway pressure
