orthoptics Flashcards
what is the period of visual development in children?
occurs btw 0-7 years, due ti plasticity of the visual cortex
if visions is not equalized within the period of visual developent, then the vision cannot be changed forever!
how do u test vision in adults?
why do squints occur in children?
refractive error, FHx, Prematurity, developmental delay, idiopathic
how do u investigate
should undergo a dilated refraction check
fundus check–>look for optic disk and good fovea
what is the cover test?
to detect the presence of a manifest or latent deviation
cover/uncover test–used for manifest deviaiogn
alternate cover test-used for latent deviation
what do u observe on a cover test?
always start w/ a light, observe corneal reflection- r they symmtertical?
use an accommodative target
test at 1/3 m target held an eye level
test at 6m
test w. or without
how do u identify a manifest squint?
explain alternate cover test?
what r latent deviations classified as?
Mx of squint in children,
indication for Sx?
a period of refractive adaptation is allowed for any glasses prescription issued (18-20wks)
once refractive adaptation is complete, u must ensure the vision in either eye is EQUAL
if this is not the case, u can do PATCHING to imporove vision in the weaker eye!
once both eyes r equal and squint is still seen w/ refractive correction, the the ptx can be considered for squint Sx!
