Mydriatic and Cycloplegic Drops
What r three uses?
A
- *Cycloplegic** means paralysing the ciliary muscles.
- *Mydriatic** means dilating the pupils.
- To dilate the pupil for visualisation of the retina
- In the management of children with amblyopia
- Use in refraction of children for the prescription of glasses

Which cyclopegic/ mydriatic drop is CONTRAINDICATED in kids?

Side effects of mydriatic and cyclopegic drops? (4)
A
- Whitening of the eyelids due to vasoconstriction, this will resolve as the drops wear off
- Atropine can cause redness of the face and a warm sensation to the touch, this is not dangerous but a lower dose should be considered
- All mydriatics will sting the eyes for a few seconds after instillation.
- Warn the patient that they cannot drive until the blurring effect of the drops has worn off - this is very important.
