What is the Ampersand?
The & symbol, meaning “and”
How can The ampersand also be used?
For etcetera - “&c”
What were the old rules to capitalisation?
Any type of noun used to be capitalised, or if they wanted to emphasise a word
What was The Long S?
Used in place of the ordinary “s” as long as it wasn’t the last “s” in the word
Why might the long S have fallen out of usage?
It’s written similarity to the letter “f”
What English Era used V’S and U’s in place of each other?
Middle English
What were V’S and U’s used for?
They would substitute each other
What happened to the function of V and U in the 1600’s?
V was reserved to be used as a consonant U was reserved to be used as a vowel
Why do modern texts have more graphological features?
They are more able to due to technology advancements
How have old text’s meanings been affected with phonology?
Old poems would have clear rhyme schemes, but the words don’t rhyme anymore.
