Ortho classification Flashcards
According to angles classification, where must the alighnment of the tooth be in reference to canine and 1st upper & lower molar
Mesiobuccal cusp of upper molar must be alighned to the central buccal groove
- canine rests interproximally between lower canine & 1st premolar.
- What is premature contact
- What does it stimulate
- A condition of tooth contact’s which diverts the mandible from a normal path of closure to centric jaw relation
- certain teeth may occlude slightly in advance of the other teeth.
- contacts that rise to very high force well before the maximum intercuspal position (MIP)
- Stimulates osteoclasts –> bone loss

What is malocclusion?
imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed.
What are main difference between overbite and overjet?
What is the normal rate for both.
- Overbite
- Vertical overlap (extention of upper over lower)
- normal = 30%
2.Overjet
- Horizontal distance
- Normal = 1-3mm
What is an open bite?
When the posteiror teeth are in occlusion but not amterior.
anterior teeth in the maxilla do not occlude with the lower anterior teeth
- What is considered a deep overbite?
- What is considered a 100% overbite?
- What the overbite is 70-100%
- When the incisal edges of the lower ant teeth contact the soft tissues of the hard palate, this is a 100% overbite
What are 3 possible causes of open bite
Tongue Thrusting or Thumb sucking,
macroglossia,
What does centric occlusion mean
Centric Occlusion
- ideal alignment of the upper and lower teeth when the jaw is in its most stable position. In centric occlusion, the upper and lower teeth fit together in a way that allows for efficient chewing and biting.
What is Anterior edge-to-edge.
What does this lead to?
An Edge-to-Edge bite can be defined as an occlusion in which the anterior teeth of both jaws meet along their incisal edges when the mouth is normally closed (centric occlusion)
posterior is in centric occlusion
- causes premature fracture of anterior teeth + traumatic removal of incisal edges.
Explain corssbite
A Crossbite can be defined as a malocclusion in which the mandibular teeth are in buccal version (or completely lingual version in posterior segments) to the maxillary teeth
Buccal/labial surfaces of maxilla bite ON or BEHIND the occlusal/lower anterior teeth.
Identify and describe Class 1
- Class 1 = NORMAL
- The tip of the mesio buccal cusp of the upper 6 year old molar
aligns with the buccal groove of the lower 6 year old molar
Look at slide 16
Identify and describe, Class 2 Division I
- Class 2 Division 1
- tip of the mesio buccal cusp of the upper 6 year old molar is mesial to
the buccal groove of the lower 6 year old molar
An overjet is present on the all anterior teeth from canine to canine
Identify and describe Class 2 Division II
The tip of the mesio buccal cusp of the upper 6 year old molar is mesial to
the buccal groove of the lower 6 year old molar
The lateral incisors are inclined forward but the central incisors are in a relatively normal position but there is a deep overbite
Identify and describe Class 3
The tip of the mesio buccal cusp of the upper 6 year old molar is distal to the buccal groove of the lower 6 year old molar
An anterior X-Bite is present on the anterior teeth
