Orofacial Pain Attributed to Lesion or Disease of Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What 2 nerves are included in this classification?
- Trigeminal nerve.
- Glossopharyngeal nerve.
Is trigeminal neuralgia unilateral or bilateral?
UNILATERAL.
How long does the pain from trigeminal neuralgia last?
From a fraction of a second to 2 minutes
What does the pain from trigeminal neuralgia feel like?
Brief ELECTRIC SHOCK/ sharp/shooting/stabbing pain.
What triggers trigeminal neuralgia?
INNOCUOUS STIMULUS (ex. toothbrushing, touching face, putting on makeup).
What may also occur alongside the electric shock pain of trigeminal neuralgia?
MAY have concomitant CONTINUOUS PAIN OF MODERATE INTENSITY.
What does trigeminal neuralgia affect?
One or more branches of the trigeminal nerve.
2 things trigeminal neuralgia rarely is?
- RARELY BILATERAL.
- RARELY SPONTANEOUS
How often does TN pain occur?
Many have PAIN FREE PERIODS (days, weeks, months, years).
7 red flags that would warrant more urgent referral
- 28 days motor/sensory deficits.
- Deafness or other ear problems.
- Optic neuritis.
- History of malignancy.
- BILATERAL TN pain.
- Systemic symptoms (ex. weight loss, fever).
- UNDER 30 YEARS.
3 types of TN?
- Classical TN
- Secondary TN
- Idiopathic TN
What is idiopathic TN?
No apparent cause.
What is secondary TN?
Underlying disease (ex. tumor, cyst, multiple sclerosis aka demyelination disease).
How is TN investigated?
- History + examination.
- High resolution magnetic resonance imaging.
