oro-facial function Flashcards
innervation of the lips
Trigeminal and Facial nerve
innervation of the tongue
Hypoglossal, Facial, and Glossopharyngeal.
innervation of the cheeks
Facial
chewing nerve
Trigeminal
innervation of the larynx
Vagus nerve
lesions to which cranial nerves cause oro-facial problems
V, VII, IX, X, XII
oro-facial function: lips
doesn’t allow food that is too hot
lip closure during chewing
oro-facial function: tongue
forms food bolus
sensitive to texture and temperature
removes food between teeth and gums
oro-facial function: cheeks
encloses food
prevents food collecting between cheeks and gums
oro-facial function: larynx
protects respiratory tract by acting as a sphincter valve
causes of oro-facial function problems
cranial nerve lesions (V, VII, IX, X, XII)
brainstem injury - swallowing centre in medulla
speech centre lesions (Broca’s, Wernicke’s, angular gyrus)
speech centres of the brain
Broca’s area
Wernicke’s area
Angular Gyrus
two facial nerve lesions
Supranuclear
- common post stroke
- unilateral lower face paralysis
- upper face preserved due to bilateral supranuclear supply
Infranuclear
- unilateral complete facial paralysis
6 oro-facial problems
- difficulty swallowing
- reduced facial expression
- poor ventilation
- slurred speech
- lacrimation (lax lower eyelid)
- drooling
3 effects of poor swallowing
- drooling
- aspiration
- poor nutrition
