Multiple sclerosis Flashcards
1
Q
what is multiple sclerosis?
A
an immune-mediated demyelinating disease that affects the CNS through hardening/scarring of the nerves
2
Q
what are the possible reasons for remyelination failure?
A
- primary deficency in precursor cells
- failure of precursor cells recruitment
- failure of precursor cell differentiation and maturation
3
Q
why could external heat aggravate the decrease in nerve conduction? (Uthoffs phenomenon)
A
- increases the hydrolysis of ACh which decreases motor unit recruitment and leads to fatigue and weakness
4
Q
what are the clinical features of multiple sclerosis?
A
- motor problems
- sensory problems
- visual problems
- bladder and bowel problems
- cognitive and emotional problems
- sexual problems
